Why Keep a Journal?

Journaling is a writing or creative practice, which involves documenting one’s reflections, ideas and feelings; often in relation to specific occurrences in that person’s life.

The Advantages and Disadvantages

One of the most commonly reported benefits of journaling is that it helps to refine thoughts. In fact, experts say it is also a very effective problem solving tool—as oftentimes we can find solutions to certain problems just from writing them on paper.

Now, one of the noted drawbacks of journaling, is that sometimes individuals tend to focus too much on negative experiences, which could end up causing more stress in that person’s life. However, once it is used in a positive way, experts say journaling can be a very beneficial practice—it is often used as a tool in coaching and psychologists say journaling is still a very useful and effective exercise for self-reflection and discovery.

Some Basic Tips for Journaling:

1. Purchase an actual journal. Depending on our needs, you can get one that is durable or choose one that will inspire you everyday. Also, reserve a pen that you’ll use specifically for journaling.

2. Decide on a time where you’ll journal each day. You may decide to journal in the morning, during an afternoon coffee break and/or at night as you wind down and get ready to retire for bed. Yet, you may also choose to keep a small journal with you all the time to jot down ideas as they come.

3. Write whatever you are inspired to write. This may be a revelation, a thought, a unique occurrence, or even some creative writing.

4. Journal following meditation. Journaling is a great way to clarify your thoughts after meditating and/or after your daily devotion.

5. Read your journal entries every now and then. Being reminded of how far you’ve come, will surely allow you to gain some insight. It may also provide some motivation, or even inspire you to step out on faith regarding something you have always envisioned to do.

Refreshing Breakfast Smoothie Bowl

Making a good breakfast smoothie bowl is all about balancing the taste with its texture. Essentially, the fruits, veggies and natural milk are the main feature of the smoothie; however, you may also include nuts, ground flax seed, wheat germ or even vitamin C powder for added texture, as well as nutrients. For added flavor, add organic vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg or natural sweeteners like, brown sugar, organic honey or agave nectar.

That said, to make this breakfast smoothie bowl, start by gathering a combo of your favorite available fruits, like strawberries, mangoes, kiwis, and/or pineapples, etc… You can even make your smoothie bowl all or mainly vegetables—choosing to use avocados, romaine lettuce, spinach, and/or cucumbers… the choices are really endless. So make it your own!

What you’ll need:

  • a blender, magic bullet or other juicer
  • unsweetened coconut or almond milk (16 oz)
  • 2 ripe bananas
  • 2 cups of your favorite fruits and/or vegetables
  • dash of nutmeg (optional)
  • Your choice of sweetener (optional)


  1. Combine your choice of milk, bananas, as well as fruit and/or veggies with other ingredients in a blender container.
  2. Cover and puree for a couple minutes.
  3. Sweeten to taste (optional).
  4. Continue to puree until nearly smooth.
  5. Pour your smoothie into a bowl and top it with extras like some banana slices, as well as nuts, granola, chia seeds, and/or ground flax seeds. Enjoy!

Ultra-Delicious Cocoa Tea Recipe

Cocoa tea is basically a Caribbean version of hot cocoa. Traditionally, to make this hot chocolate, the cocoa beans are roasted, and afterward grounded and rolled into a stick. This is then grated into a cocoa powder, which ends up being the feature ingredient of the cocoa tea.

However, for the recipe below, note that any powdered cocoa or cocao (preferably organic) will still make you a delicious hot chocolate drink.


  • 1/3 cup of grated or powdered cocoa
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • dash of nutmeg
  • brown sugar
  • nip of salt
  • 1 1/2 cups of water
  • 1/2 cup of coconut milk
  • 1 cup of almond or whole milk
  • 1 bay leaf (optional)

Cocoa tea recipe:

  • Bring water, cocoa, nutmeg, vanilla, cinnamon and bay leaf to boil in a medium saucepan.
  • Stir in coconut milk and your choice of either almond or whole milk.
  • Sweeten with brown sugar to taste, and then add a tiny amount of salt.
  • Continue to simmer mixture on low heat for a minute or two.
  • Strain into your favorite mug and enjoy your cocoa tea!
